So you turned in that paper to your faculty and they checked your carefully constructed citations (because you know better than to plagiarize….Librarians take your first born child if they catch you plagiarizing) only to find out that you cited sources that were not Scholarly or Primary (you used Popular and Secondary sources…..DANG!) Here is a quick primer on Scholarly vs. Popular journals and Primary vs. Secondary Sources. Follow these quidelines and you’ll get it right next quarter!
SCHOLARLY
-authors are authorities in their fields
-Include author’s credentials
-authors cite their sources in end/footnotes/biblio.
-articles go thru peer-review/refereed
-articles inform or report on research
-illustrations in graphs, charts, diagrams, etc.
-uses jargon specific to discipline
-often have abstracts at beginning of article
-published by professional org. or university
-indexed in subject indexes/databases
POPULAR
-Authors are magazine staff/free-lance
-Often exclude author credentials
-Authors sometimes mention sources but don’t always cite sources
-No peer-review/refereed
-Numerous ads and color
-Articles designed to entertain
-Illustrations are numerous to add market appeal
-Very simple, everyday language
-Rarely contains abstracts
-Published for profit
-Indexed in popular indexes
PRIMARY SOURCES
A Primary source presents original research methods or findings for the first time. They are factual, not interpretive.
-Journal articles, books, other publications that presents new findings, theories, results, or data.
-Newspaper account written by journalist present at the event described (eye-witness)
-Original, creative writing or works
-Diaries, photographs, letters, government records, speeches or interviews, paintings, maps
SECONDARY SOURCES
A Secondary source does not present new research but provides a compilation or evaluation of previously presented materials. They interpret and analyze the accounts and findings of others.
-A scientific article summarizing research, data, findings
-Second hand accounts
-Encyclopedia entry or reference book entry
-A textbook
-Biographies, reviews, literary criticism, analysis of clinical trials
Prospective ESL students have been testing throughout the quarter. Those applicants will be receiving their invitations to come register by level and have their orientation during the break. We also have a large group of returning students for Summer 2008. ESL and ABE classes will have extended hours for both daytime and evening classes due to the shortened number of weeks in summer quarter.
This is just a friendly reminder that all items checked out are due back 6/26/08, the last day of the quarter. If the library is closed, you can put the book in the book drop right outside the library.
